May 2024 Book Club

Published in 2019, How High the Moon is a historical fiction novel set in the racially charged atmosphere of the Jim Crow South. The story revolves around a young girl named Ella, who lives in the town of Alcolu, South Carolina, during the 1940s. The narrative weaves between Ella’s experiences and those of her cousin, Henry, who is falsely accused of murdering two white girls.

The novel explores themes of racism, identity, family, and justice. It provides insights into the challenges faced by African Americans during a time of segregation and highlights the complexities of racial dynamics in the Southern United States.

We are thrilled to have South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty as a co-sponsor for our 2024 Virtual Book Club.
