Ministry of Christian Unity: Ecumenism

This ministry focus is on the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer that “they may be one.” The Council’s mission mandates that all its work address this focus. Therefore, the Board of Directors and Ministry Work Groups reflect the Council’s diversity and the larger diversity in South Carolina of the Body of Christ. Often work groups and other partners reflect the Inter-religious community, the full Household of God, as well.

For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.

Ephesians 2:14, NRSV

Ministry of Racial Justice and Healing

Ministry of Justice and Reconciliation

The Ministry of Justice and Reconciliation focuses on areas of justice. The primary components of this ministry are Advocacy (Public Policy) and Race and Cultural Relations. A work group of volunteers assesses issues and assists staff in implementing strategies for each component. Recommendations for action and proposed policy statements are presented to the Board of Directors. The Board affirms, edits, or returns to the work group for further work these proposals. After Board adoption, implementation begins.

Advocacy in Public Policy

A large part of the Council’s mission involves working on legislative issues.   Although this area falls under the Ministry and Reconciliation, we know that any of our work areas may involve an advocacy component.  Therefore, staff and work group from all areas of life of the Council work together to determine the best use of resources and time.  Recent advocacy issues include:

Predatory Lending

In partnership with SC Appleseed Center for Legal Justice, SC AARP and other organizations and individuals, the Council continues to advocate legislation regulating predatory lending practices in SC. Legislation.

Federal Health Care Dollars in SC.

The South Carolina Christian Action Council has advocated since 2012 for legislation to bring the Federal dollars of the Affordable Care Act to SC. The Council is a founding member of a coalition formed in 2014 which is pressing this call.
